Mesa, Arizona, is home to Hohokam Stadium, which is the spring training home of the Chicago Cubs. The stadium was built in 1979 and had a capacity of 10,000 people. It features a natural grass playing surface and an electronic scoreboard. The stadium also has luxury suites, a picnic area, and a playground for children. In 2022, the A’s and the City of Mesa will stage spring training baseball at Hohokam Stadium. History

The first Hohokam Stadium was erected in 1976, a few miles to the east of the current facility. It was known as Hohokam Stadium from 1976 to 1995, and then as Hohokam Park from 1996 onwards. The stadium’s name was changed to Dwight W. Patterson Field in 1991, and the name persisted when the new stadium was built in 1997. From 1997 to 2013, the stadium was the spring training home of the Chicago Cubs. In 1999, the Cubs drew 171,681 fans for its 15 home games, an average of 11,445 people per game. In 2007, the Cubs established a Cactus League single-game attendance record of 12,906. In 2009, the Cubs established a then Major League Baseball and Cactus League single-season attendance record of 203,105 in 19 home games with an average per game attendance of 10,690—leading all MLB teams. Seven games had an average attendance of over 13,000.

Location

The stadium is located at 1235 N. Center St. in Mesa, Arizona. It is situated to the east of Phoenix near the Salt River.

Getting There

The best way to get to Hohokam Stadium is by car. The stadium has a large parking lot that can accommodate over 3,000 vehicles. There is also a light rail station located adjacent to the stadium.

Public Transportation

The Valley Metro Rail has a station located adjacent to the stadium. The light rail can take you to many different parts of the Valley, including Downtown Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa.

Stomper Kid Zone

Children aged 12 and younger in centerfield may participate in baseball games such as tee-ball home run derby and batting cages and baseball skeeball to receive an honorary Stomper’s Teammate certificate. Stomper will be available for autographs and photographs on certain games. Stomper’s Kids Zone is open to everyone, and parents are advised to stay with their children.

  • Camera Sticks – Including selfie-sticks, monopods, and tripods
  • Clothing with vulgar language or images
  • Fireworks
  • Hard-Sided Containers (Including Aluminum Cans, Coolers, Flasks, and Glass Bottles)
  • Illegal Drugs and Substances
  • Laser Lights and Pointers
  • Mace and Pepper Spray
  • Noisemakers
  • Non-Service Animals
  • Portable Chairs – except for “padded bleacher chairs” where the bottom rests on the floor.
  • Projectiles – Including Inflatable Balls and Frisbees
  • Unsealed Beverage Bottles
  • Weapons, Firearms, Knives, or any Sharp Objects – Including Pocket/Swiss Army Knives and Off-Duty Officers’ Weapons
  • Management deemed any item to be dangerous, inappropriate, or disruptive to other fans’ enjoyment of the game.
  • Hohokam Stadium does not store prohibited items. Any items left at the gates will be discarded. The Oakland Athletics are not responsible for abandoned items.
