Safford, Arizona

Safford is a town in Graham County, Arizona, U.S. The population density is 9,566 as per the 2010 Census. The City is Graham County’s county seat. Safford is the largest city of the Safford Micropolitan Statistical Area, covering all of Graham County.

The city has a total surface area of 22 km2, of which 22 km2 island and 0.078 km2 is water, and as per the United States Census Bureau.

The weather is dry semi-arid, tempered by the rise of the plateau (it receives enough rainfall not to plunge into a cold desert. Because of its relatively low elevation of 900 m at the Agricultural Center where records are held, it is much warmer than most areas in eastern Arizona, and sometimes hits temperatures just about as hot as experienced in Phoenix.

Safford was established in southwestern Arizona by Joshua Eaton Bailey, Hiram Kennedy, and Edward Tuttle who had come from Gila Bend. In the winter of 1873-74, they left Gila Bend since this subsequent summer their work on canals and dams had been ruined by high water. After arrival in early 1874, the villagers set out the location of the settlement, including one with several rudimentary constructions.

The town is named after Anson P. K. Safford, the territorial governor of Arizona. The Town of Safford was established on October 10, 1901, and in 1955 it was renamed to the City of Safford.

A freight rail line, the Arizona Eastern Railway, serves the city and operates Safford Regional Airport, an air station. The Transportation Department of Arizona is also developing the U.S. Route 191 from Interstate 10 to a four-lane highway complete.
